Check those traffic patterns

The first thing we did was study the existing Webtrends™ traffic reports. They showed that most people were visiting for product information, jumping directly to the pages that showed specifications and-or part numbers. As is all too often the case, these pages were buried three or four levels deep within the site, with only a cryptic "products" link lighting the way in miniscule ten point type. You felt that you were taking a leap of faith when you followed that products link, unsure of where you would end up.

To fix this, I created separate paths to digital photography products and memory products directly from the home page. In fact, I devoted the entire left side of the screen, aligned with an eye-catching graphic, just to those two links. The lesson is an important one: figure out WHY people are coming to your site, and make it as easy as possible for them to get there.
