The ISO Latin 1 Character Set

The table below lists the characters in the first 256 code positions of UCS, the character set of HTML 4.0 and XHTML 1.0; these are one-for-one identical to the characters in the ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) character set. The first column contains their number in decimal, and the second column in hexadecimal notation. The third column contains a sample of the character's glyph (if your browser understands numerical character references). The fourth column contains the name used in named entity references if the character has one defined, and the fifth column describes the character as defined in ISO-10646.

You can use this table in many ways; you can use it to replace hexadecimal numerical entity references with decimal ones, which are much more widely supported. You can use it to replace named entity references with numerical ones for older browsers that don't understand all of the HTML4 named entities, and you can also use it to insert character references of any kind into your documents by looking up the character and using the number or entity name.

Note that the first 33 characters are control codes and are essentially unused in modern computer systems, except for the space, tab, linefeed and carriage return characters. The characters numbered 128 to 159 inclusive are also unused, but are shown here because Microsoft Windows fonts using the Windows-1252 Western European encoding contain characters in these positions, some of which are useful (like the trademark sign and the angle quotes). You should replace occurences of these characters with their Unicode equivalents from the next table, and never use them as character references.

Note that under some circumstances (depending on browser, operating system, installed fonts and user preferences) browsers will interpret numerical character references relative to the encoding instead of UCS. Specifying the encoding of your documents explicitly will usually circumvent this problem.
