/) denotes the DOMDocument root node. The forward slash (/) is also used as a delimiter between two levels of hierarchy. For example, month/week is a pattern for matching the father/son combination. The period (.) denotes the current node. Omitting the period leaves the node at the current level. Therefore, ./week is the same as week.
