>25th anniversary of the Altair
The folks over at Slashdot clued us into the fact that it's the 25th anniversary of the Altair 8800, widely considered to be the first personal computer. Although officially for sale in late 1974, it was the January 1975 feature article in Popular Electronics that served to expose the Altair to the nascent computer hobbyist community. With only 256 bytes (yes, bytes) of RAM, and operating at a screaming 2 MHz, the Altair helped launch both the home computer revolution, as well as a small company then called "Micro- Soft", whose first product was a version of BASIC for the Altair (with the super 16 KB memory upgrade, of course). http://www.smh.com.au/news/0001/11/bizcom/A17320-2000Jan10.html http://slashdot.org/articles/00/01/10/0735230.shtml SMH.com.au, Slashdot.org, 000111
That's it for this week, see you next time.
