~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. OTHER VOICES: Creating Image Maps with Corel Xara 2, Implementing SSL Certificates on IIS, Fear and Loathing with E-Commerce, A Patchy Start; Apache's Strong
>Creating Image Maps with Corel Xara 2
You probably already know that Xara is a great application for creating Web graphics. What you might not know is Xara is also a great tool for creating Image Maps. Xara can not only create the Image Map and the associated links, it can also write the HTML. http://webdevelopersjournal.com/software/xaramaps/xara_image_map.html WebDeveloperJournal.com, 000210
>Implementing SSL Certificates on IIS
If you design your Web site for commerce and it collects credit card information or provides other confidential information, then your customers need additional protection. Find out how easy encryption can be. http://www.developer.com/journal/techworkshop/020800_security.html Developer.com, 000208
>Fear and Loathing with E-Commerce
Some call it precision target marketing. Others think it's just plain obnoxious. Are some e-commerce sites going overboard with spam? And just how "optional" is opt-in anyway? An insider's opinion on how some companies are using your not-so-private information. http://ecommerce.internet.com/opinions/article/0,1281,3551_299761,00.html Ecommerce.internet.com, 000207
>A Patchy Start; Apache's Strong
Had enough Linux mania? It's time to give another freeware, open- source application its due: the long-lived and mighty Apache server. http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,34302,00.html Wired.com, 000214
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. NET NEWS: The Hacker Hunt Continues, RSA Security Site Defaced, RealNames Hack, Dot-Com or Not-com? Branding Backlash Hits Start-Ups, Bugs, Bugs, and More Bugs

>The Hacker Hunt Continues

Computer news continued to be dominated by news of the ongoing investigation into last week's denial of service attacks. Everyone, from security pundits to sys admins, legislators to law enforcement, has an opinion on who's responsible, and what to do next. http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,1087,3_302461,00.html http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,1087,3_303191,00.html http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1007-201-1545382-0.html InternetNews.com, News.com, 000210-14

>RSA Security Site Defaced

In further computer security news, hacker keen to make a point about the insecurity of Domain Name System authentication, hit an older site maintained by the network security provider RSA. http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2437384,00.html ZDNet.com, 000214

>RealNames Hack

The latest breach of Internet security hit Internet keyword search company RealNames Inc. this week, but this time credit card information may have been compromised. RealNames CEO Keith Teare said the company noticed someone was redirecting the company's keywords to a Web site in China. To do so, the cracker had to have gone through the customer database, where customer credit card information was located. http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,1087,3_303111,00.html InternetNews.com, 000211

>Dot-Com or Not-com? Branding Backlash Hits Start-Ups

Multex.com did it. So did MapQuest.com. Just a few months before filing for an initial public offering, both firms changed their names, adding what was then thought to be a necessary accouterment - the dot-com. But now, in an environment in which dot-com is becoming synonymous with flash-in-the-pan companies running sometimes-offensive television advertising, Internet start-ups are beginning to reconsider whether dropping the dot-com might help them distinguish themselves. http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,1087,3_303151,00.html InternetNews.com, 000211

>Bugs, Bugs, and More Bugs

There's a report circulating on the Internet that stems from an article in Sm@rt Reseller magazine that says Microsoft has a busy week ahead. Windows 2000 is supposed to be introduced to the world on Thursday, Feb. 17, but before the product is ready for prime time, there are a number of "defects" that need fixing. According to online reports, there may be as many as 65,000 bugs in the system. http://www.internetnews.com/rumblings/0,1145,81,00.html http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2436920,00.html InternetNews.com, ZDNet.com, 000214

That's it for this week, see you next time.
