~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. BOOK REVIEW: Futurize Your Enterprise: Business Strategy in the Age of the E-Customer
David Siegel's done it again. The latest book from the self-made "Internet Strategist" advocates a customer-centric approach to your "e-business" strategy. Siegel takes on the increasingly popular Net paradigm of user-created content/open source and extends it to encompass nearly the entire business cycle. Essentially the idea is to let your customers drive your business strategy on the Web.
The premise is that no one company can possibly keep up, so the only possible recourse is to "employ" your users to guide your site's evolution. The old world management-led model relies on management's vision to set the correct course. The new world customer-led model is self-correcting and is aligned with customers' needs. Rather than a one-way one-voice broadcast outward, you create a rich multi-voice conversation between all your employees and customers.
The result? Customer-led companies foster loyalty through relationships and remove the distribution-driven bottlenecks that forces customers to talk to the company through special representatives. As your site opens up, it morphs from a broadcast model to a dialogue with your users. Obsession with branding gives way to quality of experience, both for the customer and your employees. Your content, services and product delivery become more efficient and better targeted. Or at least, that's the idea.
The idea of two-way conversations/user-generated content is not new - witness the success of Slashdot.org's weblog. But the idea of having your users dictate your site's evolution and even your business model is new. For many companies, opening up every employee to talk to customers, and having customers become an integral part of their team is a radical one. According to Siegel, every e-business will be doing it this way by 2010, all happily chatting away.
Here are six strategic traps to avoid:
1. Not Taking the Medium Seriously 2. Trying to Do Everything for Everyone 3. Technology for Technology's Sake 4. Brochureware 5. The Introverted Web Site 6. Taking Yourself Too Seriously
You can futurize yourself at the book's companion Web site:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. OTHER VOICES: Introduction to Perl on Windows, Security Expert Dave Dittrich on DDoS Attacks, Template-Based Web Sites as Easy as P-H-P
>Introduction to Perl on Windows
Although Perl may have been born and raised in the Unix universe, the world's favorite practical extraction and reporting language has had an established home on Windows for some time. http://wdvl.com/Authoring/Languages/Perl/Windows/ WDVL.com, 000214
>Security Expert Dave Dittrich on DDoS Attacks
Rather than rely on more second-hand media analysis of the DDoS attacks, the crowd at Slashdot went straight to an expert, Dave Dittrich. Slashdot provided the questions, and Dave offered intelligent technical analysis in response. http://slashdot.org/interviews/00/02/16/1836215.shtml Slashdot.org, 000216
>Template-Based Web Sites as Easy as P-H-P
Learn how to use PHP to build template-based Web sites. Several strategies are covered that will help you quickly set up a site that's easy to maintain and update. http://webreview.com/pub/2000/02/11/php/index.html WebReview, 000211
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. NET NEWS: Could Microsoft Open Source Code to Settle?, Time to Put the Web in Your Pocket, Colorado Lawmakers OK Internet Ad Bill, Michigan to File Suit Against DoubleClick, PointCast Sends Final Push Broadcast
>Could Microsoft Open Source Code to Settle?
In the hot rumor of the moment, Bloomberg News reported Microsoft would be willing to open the source code for its Windows software to competitors if that was all it would take to settle the antitrust case filed by the Justice Department, chairman Bill Gates said. A Microsoft spokesman strongly denied that Gates said the company would be willing to open its source code, saying that the comment was taken out of context. http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-1553128.html http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/zd/20000218/tc/20000218129.html CNet.com, Yahoo.com, 000218
>Time to Put the Web in Your Pocket
After close-but-no-cigar tries dating back to the early 1990s, Internet access through tiny screens on cellular phones is ready, running and poised to become one of the hot technology trends of the next few years. http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/tech/review/crg922.htm USAToday.com, 000218
>Colorado Lawmakers OK Internet Ad Bill
Internet spammers would have to slap a crystal-clear "advertisement" label on all electronic junk mail and provide an easy way for consumers to scratch their names from mailing lists under a bill passed Thursday by a Colorado state House committee. Colorado residents might not get any "less garbage" in their computer mailboxes, said Bill sponsor Rep. Shawn Mitchell. But with the law in place, "they will have identified garbage." http://news.excite.com/news/ap/000218/09/internet-spam Excite.com, 000218
>Michigan to File Suit Against DoubleClick
In another "local laws that may have larger effects" story, the State of Michigan is preparing to file suit against online advertising leader DoubleClick, which is also the subject of informal inquiries by the New York State Attorney General's office and the Federal Trade Commission. http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,1087,3_306291,00.html InternetNews.com, 000217
>PointCast Sends Final Push Broadcast
Once a promising start-up, PointCast has finally laid to rest its flagship technology with little fanfare. The company that created a buzz over "push" technology sent an email this past week to subscribers announcing the final broadcast of news and information over the PointCast Network. http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-1552644.html CNet.com, 000217
That's it for this week, see you next time.
