~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. OTHER VOICES: Flash Point: Home Movies Go High Tech, Why Gecko Matters, Tip of the Dot-Com Backlash?
>Flash Point: Home Movies Go High Tech
Hand-drawn illustrations and animation are the art forms most commonly used to create Flash media. Avoid expensive professional animation by using your own home videos as a source of raw material. It's cheap, fun, and the results are surprisingly artistic. http://builder.com/Graphics/FlashPoint/032400/ Builder.com, 000324
>Why Gecko Matters
Netscape is about to unleash its new browser, built around the Gecko rendering engine. Web Standards Project group leader Jeffrey Zeldman articulates the Project's position and explains what Netscape's new browser will mean to the Web. http://www.alistapart.com/stories/gecko/index.html AListApart.com, 000324
>Tip of the Dot-Com Backlash?
A San Francisco technology worker and his friends decide it's time for some attitude adjustment in Dot-Com City. Posters with barbed (and vulgar) anti-dot-com slogans are plastered all over the place. And they're striking a chord. http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,35154,00.html Wired.com, 000324
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. NET NEWS: Hackers Arrested for E-Commerce Site Break-ins, Mac IE 5.0 Ships, Collaborative Software Development Site Launched, O'Reilly Network Launches Meerkat, Can "Open Sourcing" Satellites Keep Iridium Spinning?

>Hackers Arrested for E-Commerce Site Break-ins

Raphael Gray, aka Curador, was arrested Friday for Internet fraud after a joint operation between the U.S. FBI and Welsh Police. The FBI said losses connected to the activities of Gray and another unamed 18-year-old could exceed $3 million. To top matters off, it's been reported that Bill Gates' credit card number was among tens of thousands that Curador posted on the Web. http://www.internetnews.com/ec-news/article/0,2171,4_327181,00.html http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1007-200-1590629.html InternetNews.com, CNet.com, 000324, 000326

Microsoft is shipping Internet Explorer 5.0 for Macintosh, the latest version of the default Mac Web browser. The software is available for download along with Outlook Express 5.02, an update to Microsoft's e-mail client with enhanced security features. The IE upgrade incorporates Microsoft's new Tasman rendering engine, which is designed to provide more-reliable, standards-compliant, and speedier rendering of HTML pages. http://macweek.zdnet.com/2000/03/19/0324ie5.html MacWeek.com, 000327

>Collaborative Software Development Site Launched

Asynchrony.com Inc. launched the beta version of a new virtual online community that gives software developers the opportunity to collaborate via the Internet and profit from the software they develop. http://www.internetnews.com/wd-news/article/0,2171,10_326961,00.html InternetNews.com, 000324

>Can "Open Sourcing" Satellites Keep Iridium Spinning?

Can the collective power of the Net rescue a multibillion dollar satellite network from being burned up in the atmosphere? "Save Our Satellites" founders Mike Emka, Jason Matthews and Christopher Neitzert hope so. Grandly visionary, or the latest example of the term "Open Source" being overused to the point of meaninglessness? You make the call. http://www.salon.com/tech/log/2000/03/23/save_iridium/index.html http://www.saveiridium.com/ Salon.com, 000323

That's it for this week, see you next time.
