~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. SKUTTLEBUTT: Dynamic Caching and WAP
The buzz this week is next generation caching, and WAP.
>Dynamic Caching
Two new NG-cachers are Dynamai and XOSoft. Both cache not only static content, but also some dynamic content (a keyword search result for example). Dynamai features "dynamic caching" with a smart event-based reverse proxy system to speed content delivery. XOSoft offers a similar approach to bypassing Net bottlenecks with their CloneQuick technology.
Addendum: This just in and verified, XOSoft is the first CDN to offer delta encoding, sending only the changes to documents not the documents themselves. XOSoft is not a reverse proxy but a combination of mirrors and caches, the mirrors synchronize your content (including databases) worldwide, and the caches deliver fresh content from the edges. XOSoft claims that this technique offers a more scalable solution than Akamai.
>WAP
If you gauge the popularity of a technology by the number of news stories and new books on the shelves, PHP and WAP must be hot. The Wireless Application Protocol has been around since 1997 but is just recently receiving mainstream attention. Created by Erisson, Motorola, Nokia and Phone.com, the WAP standard is designed to be a universal open specification for wireless content delivery.
There's actually a WAP backlash now, pundits are wondering how useful surfing the Web from your phone can be. For small, discrete, frequently changing chunks of info like stocks, sports, and news I can see how WAP would be useful. Two good books on WAP are:
"Professional WAP" from Wrox Press (also has a Beginning WAP prequel) is an in-depth how-to for developers. (It had the WAP MIME types listed for example). ISBN: 1-861004-0-44
For an intro to WAP try "Wireless Web Development" from apress.com is a higher level intro to wireless development for HTML, WAP, and HDML. ISBN: 1-893115-20-8
We are readying our own mobile feeds, so stay tuned.
