~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. SKUTTLEBUTT: P2P Power
This week's theme is P2P. I know, you must have acronym angst by now with all those three- and four-letter abbrevs out there like B2B (business to business) B2C (biz to consumer) etc. but we're here to clear the confusion. Peer to Peer (P2P) is simply one PC talking to another, bypassing the centralized bottlenecks of the Net. P2P is nothing new, but with Napster's notoriety it's seeing something of a resurgence. P2P puts control back into the hands of users, and can utilize those unused CPU cycles Metcalf keeps talking about (like the SETI project).
See Jonathan's tutorial above for some Perl that makes AOL's Instant Messenger sing. Here are some recent articles on P2P:
>Survey finds Web firms still burning through cash
A survey of Internet companies found that 273 of the 339 surveyed burned more cash than they took in, spending $1.8 billion in the first three months of 2000, according to a report from this week's Barrons. Our CEO, Alan Meckler, was quoted a few times in this article saying that incubator companies (like CMGI and Internet Capital Group) operate on the assumption of going public, and when the market goes south, serious cash-flow problems can arise. Only 14 of the 339 outfits surveyed were cash-flow positive in the second quarter, including DoubleClick, Prodigy, VeriSign, Xpedior, and internet.com. http://interactive.wsj.com/articles/SB970282099819009867.htm (sub req) http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1007-200-2911248.html News.com, 001001
