This week in the world of web development we continue our series of book excerpts from "Practical mod_perl" from O'Reilly. In other voices this week Jared Spool says for larger web sites with hundreds of contributors, only design patterns will do. CNET has an "incendiary" story on RSS, according to Dave Winer. The Economist says holographic data storage is fast approaching, and Bert Bos waxes philosophic about the W3C's specifications.
In Net news the Department of Homeland Security issued a second warning about Microsoft XP's security flaw that could affect as many as 75% of the country's computers. Finally, something happened last week on the Net. Spot checks revealed higher packet losses than normal and some sites went dark. Network Solutions' addressing glitch contributed to the chaos on Thursday. Come Monday however, the Net was back in good working order.

This week, we begin with a discussion about the specifics of Perl's behavior under mod_perl. By O'Reilly.

Design Patterns: An Evolutionary Step to Managing Complex Sites
How do you scale up to hundreds of contributors on larger sites,
and still maintain some design consistency? Jared Spool found that
design patterns, a solution to a specific design problem, work
better than templates, centralized design, and design guidelines.

"As commercial interests have increasingly dominated the Internet,
Web logs have come to represent a bastion of individual expression
and pure democracy for millions of bloggers." The debate centers
around the control over RSS, an XML format designed for news
syndication. Perhaps a fully independent body like the IETF or
ECMA could end the controversy surrounding this useful file format.

Government Issues Second Warning on Microsoft Security Flaw
The Department of Homeland Security issued an unprecedented second
warning Wednesday for a hole in the latest version of the Windows
operating system. As many as 75 percent of the country's computers
could be vulnerable to hacker attacks. Windows users who do not
use the auto update feature to download the latest patches are
the most vulnerable. In a related story, Microsoft.com was
unavailable Friday afternoon due to a denial of service attack.
