2. SIGHTINGS AROUND THE WEB: Urban Legends and Internet Hoaxes

Don't you just hate it when a learned colleague forwards an e-mail to you and it's another Internet hoax? The messages seem honest enough: "The artificial sweetener aspartame is responsible for an epidemic of cancer, brain tumors, and multiple sclerosis", "Starbucks refused free product to G.I.s serving in Iraq, saying it didn't support the war and anyone in it", "Warning about the 'WTC Survivor' computer virus". The problem is that when something is passed on like this, it is taken to be true without ever checking the facts. Now you can know if they are a hoax before you press that "forward" button.

Snopes.com, run by Barbara and David Mikkelson, is the best way to keep abreast of hoaxes and legends across a wide range of subject areas, i.e., cultural, political, and business.
