6. NEW SOFTWARE: Netscape 4.5, Web Painter 3, ProJPEG 3
>Netscape 4.5
Netscape released Communicator 4.5 PR1 this week, and I've been
playing with it ever since. I especially like the "What's Related"
feature (integrated Alexa), that shows you a list of ten sites
related to the one you're visiting, though the sites list didn't
always appear. In this early beta the Internet Keyword feature didn't
work well, and some complained that it is stealing hits from their
sites (Dave Winer of scripting.com complained that "scripting" now goes
to Netcenter's page instead of scripting.com like it used to.)

>WebPainter 3
This newest version of Hip's easy-to-use Web graphics creation,
editing, and optimization tool appears to perform LZW optimization
and automatically removes unnecessary frames for tight GIF89a
animations. From Totally Hip Software.
>ProJPEG 3.0
A Photoshop API-compatible plug-in, ProJPEG 3 makes optimizing JPEGs
for the Web easy, even fun. An interactive dialog shows the effects
of various settings (quality, smoothing, better image sampling,
huffman code optimization) on the file size, download time, and
image quality in real time. Busy Web designers will also like the
preset save option for optimizing multiple images.

8. NET NEWS: Jini, Yang makes Time Magazine cover, Internet World
Summer 98, Spammers Beware
>Jini: Spontaneous Networking
Sun Microsystems unveiled last week (and launched a new Web site today)
the first consumer version of distributed computing, called Jini
(pronounced GEEnee). Jini essentially extends Java and allows
people to use network devices and services as easily as plugging
in a phone.
A Jini-enabled device, such as a digital camera, would "introduce"
itself to the network, telling all of the other devices and computers
what capabilities it has and how to access them. Plug it in, and
up pops an icon on your monitor to access the camera. Sun calls it
"spontaneous networking."
"The essence of Jini is a set of guidelines that enable a federation
of Java virtual machines (JVM) to work together to make a more
powerful network. Simply put, connect anything at anytime, anywhere."
The promise is "plug and work" simplicity for network devices (hard
drives, scanners, printers, smart cards, cell phones, light switches,
toasters) all talking to each other, sharing their resources.
Ultimately the Net could become the backbone to one giant, worldwide
computer that grows organically.
Details:
Jini is a thin code header that resides on top of Java apps
and enables the network to move application code just as it moves
data. As long as a device has a network port, it can communicate,
moving Jini-enabled applets across a network.
Jini is both network and OS-independent, so a Solaris-based
workstation can communicate with a scanner on a Macintosh with no
messy setup involved. Sun hopes Jini will do for the network what
Java did for platform independence.
Sun announced the new Jini Web site today, that contains specs,
faqs, tutorials, and the buzz at:
http://java.sun.com/products/jini/
Wired ran a cover story on Bill Joy and Jini in their August
issue. It includes an interview with Joy, who likes to create
"technology dislocations" that enable quantum leaps in innovation.

>Yang makes Time Magazine cover
You know the Net's gone mainstream when Net luminaries make the
cover of Time magazine (July 20, 1998). Jerry Yang, the cofounder
of Yahoo!, is shown surfing through space and products with the
caption "Kiss Your Mall Goodbye." The story shows the dramatic
effects of disintermediation and highlights some of the Net's
richest entrepreneurs.

>Spammers Beware
A Seattle man has collected $200 from a company that violated
Washington state's new "anti-spam" law banning unsolicited
commercial e-mail that misrepresents its source or providing
misleading header information that suggests the material comes
from someone else. The law applies only to e-mail received in or
sent from Washington state.
