~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. NEW FEATURE: News Harvester 3.1 Beta - Perl/DHTML Version
JUST RELEASED: News Harvester 3.1 BETA puts LIVE HEADLINES visible on all browsers, scrolling on most, ON YOUR SITE, 24/7. FREE (our site's updated too.) News Harvester was developed as a traffic lure: fresh content to keep users coming back.
This BETA version of News Harvester 3.1 combines the best of both worlds, the scrolling action of our DHTML version plus the speed and universality of our Perl version.
Users of DHTML compliant browsers will see the scrolling headlines, and users of all other browsers will see the static headlines. This new Perl/DHTML version uses a new positioning technique and is very fast, due to optimized DHTML code, and embedded headlines within your page for instant page loads. NH 3.1 is ideal for high traffic sites or those outside of the United States, or the earth's gravitational pull.
>Infoseek and Disney Announce New Portal - Go Network
As predicted in last week's Update Disney announced a new portal today, Go Network available at www.go.com. According to Relevant Knowledge Go Network will have the third largest unduplicated reach on the Internet, in terms of unique visitors, behind only Yahoo and AOL.
The new portal (I like how they just announce a new portal, and don't have to build one up) will operate as an umbrella brand, combining the resources of Infoseek, Starwave and Disney properties, including Infoseek.com, Disney.com, ESPN.com, ABCNEWS.com, Mr. Showbiz, and others. The new site is slated to launch in preview mode in November.
>An Automated Yahoo? New Web Technology Promises End to Mile-Long Searches
IBM scientist Prabhakar Raghavan has developed a piece of software dubbed "Clever" that automates the process of finding the best, most authoritative Web pages by analyzing both the actual links in Web pages, the immediate words surrounding the link, and the number of backlinks to the site in question.
"In a few days, we could compile a list for each topic that Yahoo! lists," Raghavan said. "Clever just runs off and does its thing and brings back to best 10 or 20 or 50 results it finds."
What shows up at the end of a search is a list of about 15 "hubs" and 15 "authorities." The pages pointing to a site are the hubs, while the site being pointed to is the authority. Could this be the holy grail of automatic Web site categorization?
>Draft domain name plan goes public
A final draft proposal to form a new domain name registry company, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, was made public Thursday, the result of months of global negotiations.
Officials hope to have the company created by September 30, which is when the U.S. government contracts expire with the Internet Assigned Names Authority and Network Solutions to administer and register, respectively, the top-level domains, such as .com, .net, and .org.
