~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. BOOK REVIEW: Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing
A major upgrade of Greenspun's _Database Backed Web Sites_, this book shares what Philip learned while creating hundreds of Web sites, most with relational database management systems (RDBMS). The generic- sounding title belies the book's depth and breadth, this is a superb effort at demystifying the creation of RDBMS-backed Web sites and Web site design in general. There's lots of meat here for everyone, but the main premise seems to be: "If you want to do anything really interesting on the Web, you're going to need a relational database."
The book is a strange combination of photographs (Greenspun is the author of Travels with Samantha and an accomplished photographer) Web site design advise, and technical RDBMS/Tcl information. Greenspun himself calls it the "first coffee table Web book." The strange thing is, it all works. If, for some reason, you don't like the text you can always stare at the beautiful photographs.
Greenspun's focus is to spread the RDBMS gospel and show how Web services can replace desktop applications. He practices what he preaches too, on his photo.net site and his own startup Arsdigita offers free software and services that enable webmasters to add many of the collaborative services he talks about in the book.
The book is also fun to read, a real accomplishment for such a technical book. Greenspun's dry wit is evident throughout the book, often poking fun at conventional wisdom and prominent design gurus (David Siegel better hide in one of his tunnels). Here's a summary:
Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing
1. Envisioning a Site That Won't Be Featured in Suck.com - present multiple viewpoints, magnet content/collaborate, Web primary 2. So You Want to Join the World's Grubbiest Club: Internet Entrepreneurs
Four ways to make money on the Internet (from least to most lucrative): 1. Sites that provide traditional information 2. Sites that provide collaboratively created information 3. Sites that provide a service via a server-side program 4. Sites that define a standard enabling customers to seamlessly query multiple databases
Essential message here is don't work the edges but build applications for businesses. Web/db developers can make $200-250/hr.
>HotMetal Pro 5 Review
SoftQuad, Inc. was into SGML when the Web was just a gleam in Tim-Berners Lee's eye, and they loom large on the W3C's XML and DOM committees. Unfortunately that pedigree can't save SoftQuad's feature-rich HTML authoring tool, HoTMetaL Pro, from the bugs, interface screw-ups and poor support that IDM's reviewer uncovers. Ouch. http://idm.internet.com/reviews/hmpro50.shtml Intranet Design Magazine, Apr. 5, 1999
>Spotlight on XML
You may have heard that XML, the relatively new Extensible Markup Language, will revolutionize the Web, and that XML has the potential to reshape the way data is exchanged over the Internet. >Yahoo! Acquires Broadcast.com for $5.7 Billion
Yahoo!'s acquisition last week of broadband leader Broadcast.com gives the company over 60% reach on the Web, far ahead of the competition (50 million users/month plus 30 million/month from Broadcast.com). Tim Koogle, Yahoo's CEO, in a CNBC interview last Friday said that Broadcast.com's content will allow Yahoo! to deliver rich media in context for Yahoo surfers. Yahoo's new "turbo" service will no doubt include Broadcast.com's content. Yahoo!, the new Web TV network? http://www.thestandard.net/articles/display/0,1449,4043,00.html http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,1087,3_90621,00.html Internetnews.com, Apr. 1, 1999
>Yahoo! Responsible for Half of Search Referrals
According to Internet traffic analyzer WebSideStory, nearly half of all traffic generated from search engines to Web sites can be traced to Yahoo!. Conventional wisdom says that 50 to 75% of all Web site traffic comes from search engines, so a link on Yahoo's can mean all the difference.
1. Yahoo -- 45.92% 2. Excite -- 21.68% 3. Alta Vista -- 9.70% 4. Infoseek -- 5.32% 5. Web Crawler -- 3.35% 6. HotBot -- 3.42% 7. Snap -- 3.09% 8. MSN -- 2.32% 9. Lycos -- 1.83% 10. GoTo -- 1.69% http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,1087,3_90031,00.html Internetnews.com Mar. 31, 1999
>The Net: Software's New 'Platform'
Hotshot programmers are showcasing their wares online and portals and the Web are threatening Windows to become the new PC platform for on-demand application delivery. >Melissa Virus Suspect Arrested
Authorities have arrested and charged David L. Smith, suspected of creating the Melissa e-mail virus and unleashing it on the world from his apartment in a New Jersey shore town. Some reports say that the email about the email virus eclipse the email from the virus itself, so I'll stop right there. Copycat viruses like 'Papa' and 'Mad Cow' have already appeared. http://www.thestandard.net/articles/display/0,1449,4079,00.html The Industry Standard, Apr. 2, 1999
Open source code developers are adding a Java servlet engine to the Apache Web server, closing a gap that had been threatening to open between it and the popular Java programming language. http://www.zdnet.com/intweek/stories/news/0,4164,2234115,00.html Inter@ctive Week, Mar. 30, 1999
>Network Solutions cracks down on strategic domain investors
Network Solutions Inc. recently purged 18,000 registrations it suspected were held by speculators, who typically register thousands of names at once. The company also restricted acces to "root zone" files which can alert speculators about when a domain name will become available. http://www.techserver.com/noframes/story/0,2294,34996-56368-412496-0,00.html Nando Media/AP, Apr. 5, 1999
