~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. BOOK REVIEW: NetSlaves - True Tales of Working the Web
Negative connotations aside, NetSlaves gives us a chilling yet sardonic glimpse of what it's really like to work on the Web. In the spirit of Studs Terkel's "Working" and Po Bronson's "Nudist on the Late Shift," NetSlaves profiles the Net's working wounded to show "how rough it is to really work in the Internet business." Like two disgruntled modern-day anthropologists, the authors interviewed Net workers for a year and discovered an unspoken but very real pecking order or "New Media Caste System" to Net jobs.
Like Turkel, they use everyday job titles to help demystify the complex honorifics Internet professionals use. Each job level, from lowly Mole People and Garbagemen up through the elusive Priests, Robots, and Robber Barons is profiled with a definition, general characteristics (where they work, hours worked, mating habits...), and a story, based on an actual interview. To save on legal fees and to protect their interviewees, the authors use thinly-veiled pseudonyms for first names and company names (Cyber-America = AOL, Aggro Software = Microsoft).
The real question is, are you a NetSlave? Does the idea of updating your Web site fill you with joy? Are you tethered to your server with a T1 tied to your ankle? The authors provide a short quiz to determine your NetSlave quotient. Some highlights:
Describe your home: A. Small, but efficient B. Shared and dormlike C. Rubble-strewn and fetid D. Don't remember (but can describe the office)
My alphanumeric pager: A. Is a convenient way to stay in touch with my office B. Goes off at 3 a.m. when someone in Hong Kong has a problem changing fonts in Word C. Has been temporarily disabled D. Has been permanently destroyed
Describe your religion: A. Monotheist B. Futurist C. Satanist D. Linux
Let's start at the bottom of the Net's pecking order and work our way up.
Mole People - cultic content creators, generally not Internet professionals Garbagemen - tech support, generally tethered to their cellphones and beepers Cops and Streetwalkers - cybercops and dial-in porn stars Social Workers - chat room and BBS moderators, primary habitat: AOL Cab Drivers - Web design firm employees Cowboys and Card Sharks - programmers, generally highly paid and ponytailed Fry Cooks - project managers, flipping priorities Gold Diggers and Gigolos - deal makers, CPM salesmen, and schmoozers Priests and Madmen - Wall Street analysts and modem-waving futurists Robots - supergeeks, generally highly paid and undersexed Robber Barons - CEOs
We'll let you be the judge of where you fit in.
The basic message? Technology has changed, but human nature hasn't. The authors hope to "snare a few of you before you've left Basic Training" and save you before it's too late. They also have an axe to grind and "want these words to function as a bit of 'chin music' for the Robber Barons and Robber Barons-in-training who've done us wrong."
For those of us who work tirelessly to power the Info economy, this book is a refreshing change from the usual hyper text written about the Web (23 year-old wunderkind turns billionaire). Now if you'll excuse me, I've gotta go ice down my wrists ;-)
