X11 Colors

If adopted in its current state, the CSS3 color module will also enshrine the X11 set of color names within CSS. This is a listing of 142 color keywords that have long been incorporated within both major browsers (since version 3.0 for Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator). The X11 color set was first devised for the X Windows System (underlying most Unix operating systems), and was later widely adopted within other operating systems. While there are 142 keywords, there are in fact only 140 different colors, since there are two cases where the same color value is represented by two keywords; so Magenta and Fuchsia are two different names for the same color (##FF00FF), as is Aqua and Cyan (#00FFFF).

These values are commonly in use in the major browsers already (and that includes Opera under Windows as well as Mozilla and Konqueror under Linux), so barring users with older browsers, it is relatively safe to use these color names at present.
