Chapter 3 Excerpt: Extending the JXTA Shell*
The excerpts below are from Chapter 3 of the Wrox Press Ltd. title Early Adopter JXTA.
The JXTA shell can be extended with custom commands easily. The following section will reveal some motivation on why one may want to extend the shell, and then show how to do it with some real working custom command code.
While the JXTA shell comes with many built-in commands for working with the components of the JXTA platform, these commands are rather limited versions  and they often do not perform the exact function that we want them to. Developers and users would likely opt out of using the JXTA shell for development and testing if they were forced to work with only the included set of commands. Luckily, the JXTA community has taken a pragmatic approach to this problem, and decided that the best way to ensure the longevity of the JXTA shell is to:
- Provide an adequate set of basic commands to satisfy the largest audience possible
- Provide a simple extension mechanism for advanced users to add their own implementation of custom commands
