n this chapter, I've discussed search engines, an important tool for locating and publicizing information on the Web, and the techniques that can be used to build more efficient and search-friendly HTML pages. In particular, the following topics were covered:

• How search engines work, what are search spiders and how they index the Web;

• What search options and features are offered by the major search engines;

• What are the two strategies of selecting and grouping keywords on your web pages;

• How to use the META tag to present keywords, summary, and other meta-information for a page;

• Why the issue of authors building their own meta-information layers is controversial and what are the possible implications of this controversy.
