Web services represent a paradigm shift in the way you develop applications. You no longer develop all modules by yourself. Some of the functionality you'll get by calling Web services. But then, you need to be very careful which services are kosher and which are junk. Some sites are doing a great service by providing acceptance tests and expected results that you can check against.
