~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. THE LINUX PHENOMENON: Linux, Open software, and the Noosphere
If you want a break from reading the Starr report (and I'll spare you the stories about the Net handling the traffic, etc.) try reading the writings of Eric Raymond, a thoughtful, long-time hacker (in the good sense of the word) who wrote "The Cathedral and the Bazaar." Netscape said this paper on the Linux/Open Software movement was an inspiration for releasing the source for Netscape 5.
Eric has released a sequel, "Homesteading the Noosphere," where he explores the property and ownership customs of the open-source culture that reveal an underlying "gift culture" where hackers compete amicably for peer repute. Eric makes explicit what was once implicit, and explores the social taboos hackers staunchly adhere to.
He writes that ownership and control of open-source software has an underlying theory of property rights homologous to the Lockean theory of land tenure. One of the three ways to acquire land is by "homesteading," mixing one's labor with the unowned land, fencing it, and defending one's title. Hackers naturally "homestead" their of open-source projects (or all of its ideas) in a "gift culture" where participants compete for prestige by giving time, energy, and creativity away.
But what is the "yield" of giving away your code? You can't coerce effectively over a network connection, so seeking power is right out. Likewise, the open-source culture doesn't have anything much resembling money or an internal scarcity economy, so hackers cannot be pursuing anything very closely analogous to material wealth. What's left is your reputation among your peers, and he uses this to explain why the hacker taboos are the way they are.
If you want to understand why Linux is working so well (and if endorsement by major software companies is any indication, it's doing very well indeed [IBM, Netscape, and Oracle are coming out with Linux versions of their software]) or if you want to start your own open source project, this is a good place to start.
Definitions:
Linux: the choice of a GNU generation Noosphere: the territory of ideas, the space of all possible thoughts
>DisNet - or It's a Wired World After All
Disney's CEO Michael Eisner, sees the synergy the Net can provide, and is the driving force behind their Internet efforts. In fact, in this week's Time magazine (Sep. 14, 1998) he says he's "obsessed" with the Internet.
Like every large media company, Disney wants share. Disney's been acquiring strategic partners and properties towards that goal. Infoseek, SportsZone.com, shop.com, family.com, disney.com, add them up, and they're number three. But Disney has something you need to keep them coming back for more, compelling content. In January, Disney acquired go.com, and it's rumored that they'll pool all their sites around this one huge portal, to aggregate their traffic (advertisers like large numbers of eyeballs, Mecklermedia does this with their Internet.com sites [i.e. webreference.internet.com]).
Disney, like CNET and others, buys prime, one-word domain names. These easily recognized names (like movies.com, go.com, foods.com, dig.com...) act as a kind of virtual real estate for the '90s. Buying a one-word domain name in the topic of your focus (in Disney's case entertainment) won't guarantee visitors initially, but by having *the* domain name, they can claim that theirs is the definitive site, even if it isn't.
>Two More Sites Added to Internet.com Network
Mecklermedia announced today the acquisition of two developer sites, Scriptsearch and Intranet Design Magazine. http://www.innergy.com http://www.scriptsearch.com http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/1998/09/1401-acquisition.html InternetNews.com, Sep. 14, 1998
